The Number, and Where It Comes From

Las Vegas tap water carries roughly 280 ppm of dissolved calcium and magnesium — about 16 grains per gallon. The Las Vegas Valley Water District publishes figures in that range and classifies the supply as "very hard". About 90 percent of it arrives from Lake Mead, fed by the Colorado River, which spends hundreds of miles dissolving minerals out of rock before it gets here.
For scale: the water industry treats anything above 10.5 grains per gallon as very hard. Las Vegas clears that threshold by half again. Most American cities never come close.
None of this makes the water unsafe. Calcium and magnesium are not contaminants and the supply meets drinking-water standards. The issue is purely mechanical — and it is relentless, because every gallon that enters your home leaves a little mineral behind.
What Scale Actually Does Inside Your Plumbing
Hard water does not corrode things directly. It deposits. As water is heated or evaporates, dissolved minerals fall out of solution and bond to whatever surface is nearest. That process plays out differently depending on where it happens:
- Water heaters. Sediment settles on the tank bottom and cakes onto electric elements. The burner or element then has to drive heat through an insulating mineral layer, which wastes energy and eventually cracks the element or the glass lining. - Tankless units. Heat exchangers have narrow passages and run very hot, which is close to ideal conditions for scaling. Untreated, a tankless unit in this valley can start throwing temperature errors and lockout codes within a few years.
- Supply pipes. Scale narrows the bore. Narrower pipe means higher velocity and higher pressure at joints, which finds weak fittings.

- Fixtures and appliances. Aerators clog, cartridges seize, dishwashers and washing machines wear their valves out early.
The Symptoms Worth Paying Attention To
Most of what people notice is cosmetic, but each visible symptom maps to something happening out of sight:
- Cloudy glassware and spotted dishes — mineral residue left as water evaporates.
- White crust on aerators and shower heads — the same deposit, somewhere you can reach.
- Soap that will not lather, and skin or hair that feels filmy after a shower.
- Rising water-heating costs with no change in habits — often the first sign of a sediment layer.
- Popping or rumbling from the water heater — steam bubbles forcing their way up through settled sediment. That noise means the tank is already well along.
What Actually Helps
There are three honest options, and the right one depends on your home and how long you intend to stay.
Do nothing but maintain. Flush the water heater annually to clear sediment before it insulates the tank bottom, and descale fixtures as needed. Costs almost nothing and genuinely extends equipment life, though it does not stop scale forming elsewhere.
Install a whole-home softener. Exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium so nothing scales downstream of the unit. One local quirk worth knowing: many newer valley homes were built with a capped softener loop already plumbed into the garage. If yours has one, adding a softener later is a far smaller job than it would otherwise be — worth checking before assuming it is expensive.
