The Failure Mechanism, Step by Step
Understanding the sequence makes the maintenance advice obvious:
- Sediment settles. Minerals drop out of the hot water and accumulate on the tank floor, directly above the gas burner or around the lower electric element.
- The layer insulates. Heat now has to pass through mineral before it reaches water. The burner runs longer for the same result, which is where the quiet increase in your gas or power bill comes from.
- The tank overheats locally. Steel above a burner with no water contact gets far hotter than designed. On electric units, elements caked in scale burn out.
- The glass lining fails. Thermal stress cracks the protective lining, bare steel meets water, and corrosion starts.
- The tank leaks. Once a tank is weeping there is no repair — a leaking tank is a replacement.
The rumbling or popping people describe is steam bubbles forming under the sediment layer and forcing their way up. It is an audible late-stage warning, not a quirk.

Tankless in a Hard-Water Valley
Tankless units sidestep the sediment problem entirely — no tank, nothing to settle in. But their heat exchangers use narrow passages at high temperature, which is close to perfect conditions for scaling, and a scaled exchanger shows up as fluctuating temperatures, reduced flow, and eventually error codes and lockouts.
The honest summary: tankless is an excellent choice in Las Vegas if you either soften the water or commit to descaling on schedule. Installed and then ignored, it can disappoint faster than the tank it replaced.
